containers (40.7 oz and 48.7 oz containers may also be used. It's fun to use different sizes.) Set aside lids for the sand castle kit described below.
PARENTS ONLY: Craft knife
Nonstick cooking spray
HOW TO DO IT
PARENTS ONLY: Using a craft knife, carefully cut around upper rim of NESQUIK containers to create a smooth surface for molding sand.
For easier release of sand from the mold, lightly coat the inside of each container with non-stick cooking spray. Bring the spray with you to the beach in case you need to re-spray the containers.
WHAT YOU NEED
To Make and Fill the Sand Castle Kit:
Plain canvas tote with drawstring or a pillowcase
Twine or ribbon (if using a pillow case)
Fabric paint and brush or fabric paint pen in a variety of colors
NESQUIK sand molds
Lids from the empty NESQUIK containers used to make the molds
Various sizes of plastic cups
Plastic shovels or spoons
Combs
Small toys and decorations such as action figures, ribbons, flags, buttons, etc.
Plastic spray bottle
Building plans template
Plastic trash bag
HOW TO DO IT
Decorate the canvas tote or pillowcase with the paint or paint pens. Use the kit decorating template provided for decorating shapes. Let dry completely.
Print several copies of the sand castle building template. (Having your child follow the plans will enhance his or her reasoning skills and help with learning to follow sequential directions. Even a fun day at the beach can add to a child's learning experience!)
Fill the bag with the items suggested in the list above.
If using a pillowcase, gather the top and tie with twine or ribbon.
At the beach, use the items in the kit, along with the building plans, to create your sand castle.
Use the NESQUIK container molds to create the larger walls and towers of the castle. Fill them with wet sand, so the molded sand forms will hold their shape.
If you wish, the plastic cups can be used to shape smaller mounds of wet sand to create variations in the size of walls and towers.
Use a shovel or spoon to gently carve out doorways and windows.
To add texture to the walls of the castle, drag a comb gently down the sides.
The NESQUIK container lid can be used to imprint a stepping stone design in front of the castle.
Use a NESQUIK container sand mold to dig a moat approximately 4" wide around your castle.
Use the lids of the NESQUIK containers as bridges across the moat.
While you're building the castle, fill the plastic spray bottle with water and spray the castle forms regularly to keep them moist.
At the end of the day, use the plastic trash bag to bring sandy toys and tools home. Be sure to have the kids pick up any trash before leaving the beach.
TIPS
Since the items used in the kit are usually found around the house, you may want to make one kit for each child in your family.
Special Tips for a Great Day at the Beach:
For a day's outing at the beach, be sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your little ones' skin and eyes. A beach umbrella also comes in handy on hot, sunny afternoons.
Pack a picnic lunch in a cooler. A kid-friendly, beach-friendly lunch might include chicken tenders, fruit and plenty of cold drinks.
Using a beach ball, organize a soccer game, a game of catch or a "hot potato" game in the sand.
Organize a fun sand castle building contest between the beach lovers in your group. Make up teams of 2 or more people.
Use the empty NESQUIK canisters as beach pails to collect seashells, pebbles and wood to take home or to use for decorating the sand castles.
Remember, live marine life should be left alone to be enjoyed in its own environment.
Bring a child's watercolor or acrylic paint set to the beach so the kids can paint the inside of the seashells they collect. Be sure the shells are rinsed in fresh water and dried completely before painting.
FOLLOW-UP FUN
When you get home, the kids can keep the seashells and other treasures they collected at the beach in the NESQUIK containers.
The containers are also good for storage of small toys or loose crayons.
