Chinese New Year Lantern

    WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 empty NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Hot Cocoa Mix canister
  • 1 large sheet of red construction paper (at least 15” in length)
  • Utility knife
  • 1 to 2 sheets of gold tissue paper
  • Glow stick (available in the camping section of sports store)
  • Craft glue stick
  • Craft glue gun
  • Cellophane tape
  • 1 dowel rod (1/2” in diameter)

    HOW TO DO IT

  • Cut the red construction paper to measure 5” x 15”.

  • Wrap the paper around the empty canister and secure with cellophane tape.

  • (PARENTS ONLY) Cut 6, 1” wide x 3 1⁄2” high, openings around the canister, spacing them about 1” apart.

  • Cut 6 pieces of gold tissue paper to measure 1 1⁄2” wide x 4” high. Tape them inside the canister to cover each of the 6 openings.

  • The metal bottom of the canister will now be the top of the lantern.

  • With a craft glue gun, adhere the gold ruffle trim and/or tassel trim around the top and bottom rims of the canister. Make sure you glue the trim just to the lid rim so that you can open and close the lid without ruining the trim.

  • Print out the Chinese Symbol template.
