WHAT YOU NEED
1 - 40.7 oz NESTLÉ
®
NESQUIK
®
Powder canister lid
15 craft sticks
6” of iridescent nylon cord
Craft glue gun
Safety scissors
Utility knife
1/8” hole punch
Acrylic paint: light blue and white
Acrylic paint for plastic: light blue
17” length of decorative holiday garland
White glue
Paint brush
HOW TO DO IT
Punch 4 holes, at equal distances, around the rim of the NESQUIK lid.
Paint the lid with light blue acrylic paint for plastic. This paint is made to stick to plastic surfaces. Let dry.
For each snowflake, stack 4 craft sticks, criss-crossing them so they form a star shape (see image above).
Glue each snowflake together where the craft sticks intersect.
Make 4 snowflakes and let each dry completely (5 minutes if you are using a glue gun).
Paint each snowflake on 1 side with light blue acrylic paint. Let dry.
Paint each snowflake on the other side with white acrylic paint. Let dry.
Once the snowflakes are completely dry, paint each side with white glue and sprinkle iridescent glitter. Let dry.
Cut 2 strands of iridescent nylon cord to measure 8” long.
String the cords through 2 of the holes in the rim of the lid and tie into knots to hold securely.
Using a hot glue gun, glue 1 snowflake to each cord.
Cut 2 strands of iridescent nylon cord to measure 10” long.
String these cords through the remaining 2 holes in the rim of the lid and tie into knots to hold securely.
Using a hot glue gun, glue 1 snowflake to each cord.
Glue the length of decorative holiday garland around the rim of the lid. Try to find an iridescent, glittery garland for that "snowy" look.
(PARENTS ONLY) To make the hanger for the mobile, use a utility knife to make 2 holes in the top center of the lid. Then, thread an 8” long nylon cord through both holes and tie into a knot to make a loop.
FOLLOW-UP FUN
Once your child has mastered these craft stick snowflakes suggest other ways to create them. For example: draw simple snowflake patterns onto black construction paper using white craft glue as a "pen." Sprinkle glitter over the snowflake patterns while the glue is still wet. Once the glue has dried, you can shake off the excess glitter and see that you have created beautiful snowflakes!
